National education reform leader and author Kevin P. Chavous headlines the event with his presentation Building a Learning Culture in America. Through personal stories of his work as an educator, advocate and change agent, Chavous shares his vision of how to regain a positive learning culture and regain international leadership in education.
A motivating messenger for choice, Chavous helped shape the charter school movement in the nation’s capital and works to advance reform efforts throughout the U.S.
The program will also feature Ohio school leaders sharing their strategies for creating a culture of learning and engagement in their classrooms.

Closing Keynote
Jim Mahoney, Ph.D., executive director of Battelle for Kids, will provide the closing keynote on Creating Highly Effective Teachers.
Jim Mahoney always says, “Children may represent 25 percent of our population, but they represent 100 percent of our future.” A long time educator, Mahoney has dedicated his life to bettering educational opportunities for all students, serving as a superintendent, principal, and teacher, as well as an adjunct professor at several Ohio universities. In 2001, he joined Battelle for Kids as the organization’s first executive director.
Under Mahoney’s leadership, Battelle for Kids has grown into a national not-for-profit that partners with school districts, state departments of education, business, and philanthropic organizations in nearly 30 states as well as the District of Columbia and Hong Kong to implement successful education-improvement strategies.
A well-known speaker, Mahoney has made presentations throughout the United States, Canada and China. He also co-authored the book, Data-Driven Decisions and School Leadership: Best Practices for School Improvement and has had several articles printed in state and national publications.
Mahoney has been recognized on numerous occasions for his leadership in education, including the Ohio University Voinovich School Leadership in Public Innovation Award; Ohio Friend of Education Award from the Ohio Federation of Teachers; the President’s Award from the Ohio School Boards Association, an award given annually to an individual who has greatly influence public education; the Ohio Superintendent Outstanding Performance Award from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation; and the Educator of the Year Award from the Ohio Association of Local School Superintendents.
